How to Make Healthy Food Choices in a College Dorm

It’s not easy for any college student to eat healthy, and that’s true for Villanova University students as well. It’s so much easier to order takeout than it is to actively think and plan healthy meals for the week. But nutrition is a huge aspect of your personal well-being; if your body is suffering, it’s almost certain that your mental and emotional well-being will suffer as well. That’s why it’s extremely important for you as a student to keep your body happy! Your mind depends on the nutrients you give it. That test you have on Friday? Make sure you study hard and get a good night’s sleep – but a good, nutritious meal is just as important to your mental state!

No one is denying that it’s difficult to focus on your healthy eating habits when school cafeterias are awash with spaghetti, pizza, and soft serve ice cream on demand. No one’s arguing that you, as a student, have only so much time to cook yourself healthy meals or shop for healthy ingredients. If you’re honest with yourself – it feels like you have no time at all. So what are you supposed to do? How do you take care of your body while still functioning as a full-time student?

Here are a few tips on how to eat well in spite of your crazy college schedule!

Stock Your Mini Fridge

It’s so much easier to eat healthy if you have a mini fridge in your dorm stocked with fruits, vegetables, and other good snacks. When those late-night cravings kick in, you have the option to reach for an apple instead of reaching for the number to Domino’s Pizza.

Go for the Whole Grain Option

You’re standing in the snack aisle at the grocery store. You can’t help it – you have three tests tomorrow; you are so stressed out you might die. To manage this stress, you need to eat an entire bag of chips. You just need it.

Okay. I understand. But consider your options. Instead of those nacho cheese Doritos – why not grab the whole grain tortilla chips and some salsa? Overall, you’ll feel better, more satisfied, and you’ll fill your belly with some fiber and protein instead of processed cheese and salt.

Reach for Water, Juice, and Tea Before Soda and Beer

This one’s pretty self-explanatory. As a student, you probably don’t drink enough water to begin with. Few people really do! So, before you reach for anything sugary or carbonated, fill up a water bottle and chug the whole thing along with your daily multivitamin. Chug two if you’re feeling really ambitious.

Next step – tea. Tea is basically a liquid superfood. There are so many great teas in the world, packed with antioxidants and natural mood-and-immunity boosters. Find your favorite herbal tea, drop a dollop of honey into that mug, and slurp it up. Your body will thank you!

Lastly, juice. Like soda, drink juice in moderation – but definitely head for the Tropicana before the ginger ale! Juice has a lot of sugar, but it also has tons of vitamins and minerals; so a daily glass of orange or pineapple juice is a great way to wake up your brain and your body.
